Writing a Short Comparison Paper About Poetry

You are to write a brief (3-5 page) essay on one of these three prompts (or one of your own devising—subject to my approval):

A) Assuming that the risky business found in romance is there to test or prove the genuineness of the lovers’ feelings for each other, who do you think makes the more admirable erotic heroine, the Shulamite or Davis’s speaker? What are the major risks/threats each of them faces, and how does each one endure or overcome these obstacles?

B) If the Shulamite embodies innocent passion in first love, how would you characterize what Davis’s speaker embodies? Do the Shulamite’s characteristics seem more romantic than “Davis’s?” Would you argue that Davis’s speaker cannot be seen as romantic, or would you argue that she is trying to redefine what “being romantic” means?

C) The Shulamite uses many striking metaphors and similes to describe her lover, and so does Davis’s speaker—though of a very different sort. What notions of an ideal lover do the women speakers express, or what qualities do they find attractive in men? What are their expectations about what men should bring to a relationship, and does either of them ever get what she desires?

Your thesis should be a clear answer to whatever is the main question of the prompt you have chosen. The following are some plausible examples, but you should definitely come up with your own:
• (For A) Davis’s speaker is the more impressive romantic heroine because her greatest obstacles to happiness are the very men she is hoping to find happiness with.
• (For B) For Davis’s speaker the romance is not to be found with any one man but with her own struggle to find romance, however short-lived it may be.
• (For C) While the Shulamite and Davis might agree that it is vital that a lover be passionate, Davis also seems to have some intellectual requirements that the Shulamite might not think very important.

First paragraph: Discuss your own observations and experiences relevant to the issue and the focus you have selected. Give your opinion about why you find the topic interesting and why you think a reader should too.

Second paragraph: Briefly introduce and summarize The Song of Song’s and Davis’s depictions of this issue (include the author’s full name and the full titles of both books, in italics). You may, if you think it best, focus on a single longer poem or a series of shorter connected poems in Davis’s book (e.g., the Francesca poems). Conclude by stating your thesis in a complete sentence.

Throughout the body of your essay you should be discussing specific points of comparison or contrast between the two groups of poems. Do not organize by discussing SoS in the first half and then Davis in the second. Instead, organize by relevant sub-topics. Each prompt suggests a different way of organizing your arguments and presentations of evidence. For instance, A) could be organized according to these sub-topics, each covered by 1-2 paragraphs:
• What the Shulamite’s obstacles are like compared to Davis’s.
• What actions each woman takes to respond to these obstacles.
• What the results of these actions are for the women.
