Life and Ebony paper assignment Your final paper assignment will be an opportunity to explore the racial divide in American culture during the turbulent decade of the 1960s. Your task will be to compare two important magazines of the era, Life and Ebony. During the 1960s, Life was a weekly national publication and Ebony was a monthly magazine targeting African Americans. You will need to pick a civil rights topic on which to focus and compare its coverage in both Life and Ebony. Look at the style, tone, overall perspective, and evidence of the intended audience for these two magazines. Look for differences and similarities in reporting. Neither magazine overtly tried to exclude readers based on race, but there will be many points of comparison. Here are a few civil rights topics that you can choose from: the sit-in movement (Greensboro, Nashville, Columbia), the Freedom Rides, the Albany Movement, the Birmingham Children’s Crusade, the murder of Medgar Evers, the killing of four little girls in Birmingham in 1963, the 1963 March on Washington, Mississippi Freedom Summer, St. Augustine protest in 1964, the 1965 Selma march, LA Watts riots in 1965, the assassination of Malcolm X, 1966 March Against Fear, Stokely Carmichael and Black Power,1967 riots, the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968, riots following MLK’s assassination, the Black Panthers in Sacramento, Berkeley, Los Angeles, or Chicago.
