In the 21st century, public health nurses face many challenges. For instance, there is a public health nursing workforce shortage, which leads to errors, dissatisfaction, burnouts, high mortality rates, and higher morbidity. Challenges for Public Health Nursing in the 21st Century

Public health nursing faces three primary challenges in the 21st Century. Firstly, the presence of many baby boomers in the United States has augmented healthcare quality demands in the country. According to Buerhaus et al. (2017), the United States Medicare admission is estimated to upsurge to 80 million, leading to increased healthcare demand in 2030 because of the aging baby boomers. Secondly, public healthcare nursing faces a shortage of physicians because of retirement and increasing healthcare demand. Lastly, the uncertainty of healthcare reform that has reduced the number of insured individuals in the country presents a significant challenge to public health nursing.
