Examining the rhetorical moves in introduction of the article that you are working with. We are just looking at the introductions–not the rest of the article.
Please find where your article makes each of the three major rhetorical moves that Swales describes:
Establish a territory
Establish a niche
Occupy the niche
For each of those major rhetorical moves, also identify how the author(s) make each of those moves. For example, when they establish their territory, do they summarize existing knowledge, summarize an ongoing debate, and/or summarize the history of an idea? (The options for the other moves are on the powerpoint.)
Remember that not all articles do the three moves in order. Also, some articles will spend a lot of time on one move and less time on another. Sometimes, an article will done of the above moves in a way that is not on my powerpoint. It is rare than an article skips one of these moves entirely, but it does happen.

After you have done all that, please brainstorm at least one response you might make to the article. You will need to draw on your own experience of writing and learning to write to come up with this idea–the answer is not in your article.
