Analysing a real life human example of classical conditioning
Provide a real life human example of classical conditioning from your own life (either you or someone in your life). Label the unconditioned stimulus (UCS), unconditioned response (UCR), conditioned stimulus (CS) and conditioned response (CR). The UCS and UCR are the naturally occurring part that does not require learning for the association to take place. We don't have to teach a dog to salivate when food is placed in his mouth, he just does it naturally based on his biological reflexes.
this was an ineffective method for him as he would often hit the snooze button multiple times until well after he was supposed to be at school or work. However, we eventually noticed that if we placed a delicious smoothie next to his phone, it seemed to be much more effective in getting him out of bed on time.
The unconditioned stimulus (UCS) in this case was my brother’s natural desire to stay in bed and sleep longer than necessary; this is something that does not require any learning or conditioning for him to do as it’s instinctive behavior. The unconditioned response (UCR) was hitting the snooze button multiple times until finally dragging himself out of bed late - again, due to his natural instinctive behavior.
The conditioned stimulus (CS) in this case was us placing a delicious smoothie near his phone every night when setting his alarm; because he could not access it without first waking up and turning off the alarm, it became associated with wakefulness rather than just sleeping through the sound of ringing bells. The conditioned response (CR) then became my brother actually waking up at the specified time each morning instead of constantly hitting snooze - showing that there had been successful conditioning once our CS (the presence of tasty treats near the alarm clock each day) had been established.
