My name is Marie Antoinette Assagioli MAA. I was born in Mexico City 01-29-1986. I have three older
brothers and one younger sister. My religion is Catholic. Ancestors emigrated from Spain and Italy during
the Spain Colonization. My culture is Mexican with Pre-Hispanic roots. I emigrated from Mexico City in
  1. I am a single mother and a domestic violence survivor, first during my childhood than with my first husband. I have an amazing daughter with special needs. I also take care of my mother who has come to live with my daughter and me. Because she has several chronic illnesses, she is not able to work or perform daily activities by herself.
I began taking classes at the College of Marin in 2010. I interrupted my studies in 2012 because I had an accident at my last job. I was assaulted by a patient. I used to work as an LVN Licensed Vocational Nurse
(LVN). As a result of my accident, I can no longer work as a LVN. I became physically, disabled. I was left
with severe injuries to my spine and neck, and a brain contusion resulting in chronic migraines.
In order to maintain my commitment to my education, I need to use a rolling backpack, ergonomic desk,
and ergonomic chair to relax my back and neck during classes. I have applied for some available
scholarships. I have been maintaining a 4.0 GPA despite all my challenges, including the past North Bay
Wild Fires. I had lost many economic resources and personal belongings during the fires. Actually, I am
working as a social services provider with a nonprofit Agency, Caritas. I am currently working with families,
single individuals and disenfranchised minority groups such as undocumented immigrants, refugees,
chronic homeless, domestic violence survivors, Human and Labor Trafficking survivors, sex offenders,
former inmates, LGBTQI+ individuals, and people with a variety of mental disorders, providing assistance
with, social services and any other resources they may need to reintegrate themselves in the society again.
I am currently pursuing a certificate in Human Services – Advocacy, and an Associates of Arts degree with a Social and Behavioral Sciences major. Eventually, I would like to transfer to UC Berkley for a Bachelor’s
Degree in Sociology. Eventually, I plan to pursue a master’s degree to become a Vocational Counselor.
I always enjoy helping others. I have volunteered for several agencies including Marin County Community
Gardens, California Homemakers Association, Big Brothers and Sisters of the North Bay, United Way of the
Wine Country, and St. Rafael Church. As a volunteer, I provide English-Spanish interpreting and translation,
recruit new members, free tax preparation, and distribute food. In my church, I teach nutrition, credit counseling classes, and Human and Labor Trafficking Awareness and Prevention workshop for the parishioners mostly on weekends, and organize meetings. I have the honor to be part of Kaiser’s Board of
Directors. My most current community-based project is to finish the Sonoma Community Resilience Training with The Center for Mind-Body Medicine to start facilitating workshops within College of Marin and other nonprofit organizations in order to support fire survivors and other people who have experienced serious trauma in the process of learning healing, resilience, and self-care techniques.
I eventually want to work as a counselor. I have been inspired by my own counselors who have helped me recover from my accident. I want to inspire others with my story. I see myself as a hero rather than a victim of the circumstances. I believe that everything happens for a reason. I do my best to remain positive,
friendly, honest, and happy. This helps me to overcome my daily obstacles. I aim for positive outcomes for all of the difficult situations that I meet on a daily basis, and I do my best to learn from those experiences. I am successfully managing my disabilities while attending school on a daily basis. After obtaining the certificate in Human Services – Advocacy, I expect that I will be able to do the work that I love the most, helping people to make good decisions in order to have a better quality of life. I hope that my own experience will inspire others.
