Cause of Domestic Violence in the US

Learning Objectives:
1) Develop a research paper on a topic of interest.
2) Research and describe this topic.
3) Apply the theories and ideas learned from class to this topic.
4) Analyze the topic based on the theories and ideas learned in class.

Instructions:
You will need to pick a topic that interests you. This topic should be a sociological issue or social problem that is of interest to you. You should research this topic to find out more about it through reputable news sources, peer reviewed journal articles, etc. Then you will pick three of the theories discussed in class and apply them to this topic, analyzing the topic through the lens of each theory. For example, you could discuss how Structural Functionalism, Critical Theory, and Critical Race theory would approach and analyze the black lives matter movement. The point would be to describe what each theory would say about the topic. You will need to compare and contrast how these theories would analyze your chosen topic highlighting what you think each theory does well and what each theory does not do so well. You would then conclude by describing which theory or theories you think fit best, which theory or theories do not fit as well, and why. You will need to use at least 10 sources. Some of these will come from class readings on the three theories you wish to use while others will come from the background readings you will need to do in order to properly describe the topic. Your paper should be 9-12 pages in length, Times New Roman, 12-point font, and 1-inch margins.

Sample Outline:

Introduction (5 points): Introduce your topic and describe its significance and relevance. Provide short summaries of the theories you will be using. Conclude the introduction with your thesis/main argument stating which theory or theories are more appropriate for your topic and why. (1-2 pages)

Summary of Theories (10 points): Describe in detail the three main theories you are drawing from and what their main arguments are. Make sure to cite your sources carefully. (2-3 pages)

Application of Theories (10 points): Apply your theories to your topic describing how each theory would analyze or view your topic. Make sure to back up your claims about each theory with evidence from the text, making sure to cite carefully. This section may be combined with your summary of the theories if you like. (3-4 pages)

Discussion of Theories (10 points): Discuss which theory or theories fit your topic the best or provide the best explanation or analysis of your topic and which theory or theories did not fit. Make sure to explain why. Avoid using phrases like “I think/feel/believe/hope/etc.” Instead use “I argue/claim/contend/maintain/etc.” (1-2pgs)

Conclusion (5 points): Summarize your topic, theories, and arguments. (1-2 pages)

Bibliography: please list your sources and citations in ASA or APA format. (1-page max – if you go over, it won’t count toward your total pages.)
