found on the Learning Portal.) 2. What major characters are introduced in the chapter? What virtues and/or vices and thematic issues do they represent? How does Grendel react to or deal with them? 3. What is the primary conflict in the chapter? How does the outcome of that conflict convey meaning? 4. What is the main theme or central idea of the chapter? How does the chapter celebrate or demonize a cultural value, virtue, or way of thinking? Evaluate the presentation of this theme by Gardner. 5. Comment on Gardner’s style, focusing on diction, use of literary elements, and contextual/comparative (to Beowulf) meanings.
