Jane Addams’s Twenty Years at Hull House

-Read chapters 5, 8, 10, and 11 of Twenty Years at Hull House.
-Jane Addams was a complex person. Although she clearly felt the economic and political environment was partly responsible for the terrible poverty among immigrants she discusses, at times she seemed to blame the
immigrants’ behavior as well. What do you think she believed was the more important of these two causes? Do you agree with her?
-The first draft of your paper is due March 21. For the draft, write a paragraph in which you explain which set of causes you think Addams emphasized the most. In your second paragraph, discuss one example where Addams seems to blame the immigrants’ behavior for their poverty. In your third paragraph, discuss an example where she seems to be blaming the economic or political environment. In a fourth paragraph compare
the two examples—which does she seem to feel is really the root cause of poverty?
