We frequently talk about the mental health of an individual as being important to and embedded within their
overall well-being.
For this assignment, please research and list 2 mental health advocacy organizations in Jacksonville,
Florida (USA). Constructively critique elements of this organization (5pts for each organization), list any
relevant or interesting past or future events hosted by this organization, and why these are important based
on what you’ve learned in this course (5pts for each organization). If you found a one-time event, dig deeper
into who is sponsoring it and why. These organizations and/or events should be focused on mental health,
particularly those with an advocacy focus.
Please try to find organizations beyond the national ones, such as NAMI – something that is personalized
and focused on a local group or population.
So that we can share resources, please post as an extended discussion post (20 pts) with 3-4 paragraphs
(no more than 4). Remember to make sure you are checking your grammar and spelling. The discussion
post rubric still applies so be sure to put some time and thought into your posts. Please try to avoid
duplicate organizations.
Reflection should include:
What organizations are you focusing on?
What are their mission and goals (briefly)?
Do they sponsor events or provide resources for mental health advocacy and promotion in the area? What
kind?
What do they seem to be doing well? What could be improved?
How does this group, or event(s) they plan to do or have done in the past, apply to the material you have
studied in class?
What opportunities are there for involvement (volunteering, etc.)
Discussion Post Guidelines:
(5 points total) The Initial Post should be a minimum of two paragraphs based on the
discussion topic and can reference powerpoints, readings, films, or any course material. I
want to hear your opinion and your working knowledge of the material. The discussion posts can be
answered in many different ways, I encourage well-thought-out and
creative opinions based on experiences, acquired knowledge, general feelings on the topic, and tie it
back to the sociological understanding of society. You will not receive points for posting one
sentence and not referencing the course material or simply saying “I agree” to someone else’s
post because that is not contributing. DISCLAIMER: This class will explore deeply sensitive and passionate
topics that everyone has
had their own experiences and beliefs. All posts will be tolerant of all other viewpoints, there
will be no hate, mocking, trolling, or any other activity that creates an unwelcoming
environment. The purpose of college is to learn from all other viewpoints and share your thoughts
in the diversity of ideas
