In this essay-observation you may choose between several possible
problems to address:
(1) Aleka Titzer learning to read — be sure to view her at 9 months (Aleka Titzer) and the talk with her dad (Dr.
Robert Titzer explained the methods) when she was 16 years old and a sophomore at Stanford.
(2) Critique the research of Bergelson and Swingley about receptive and productive vocabulary from 6 to 9
months of age in normal children and also connect it with the Titzer findings. (Be sure you consult that research
if you choose this problem.)
(3) Critically examine Bloomfield’s theory that nonsense pseudowords should be used to teach children to
read. (Be certain to read what is in the book and be careful to get the facts right in what you say.)
This is the final essay of the course. It should be about 1 page in length. Check the format for spelling, syntax,
and all the niceties of writing so any errors do not detract from your content. The grade for a maximum of 200
points will be based on how well you present and defend the ideas in your content. You must show
comprehension of the material assigned for reading and you must connect your writing to what you have read,
or heard and seen, in the Panoptos or the materials hyperlinked to the readings assigned to you.
