For this module, students are required to submit a two part assignment. Please note all students must complete part 1 of the assignment. However, for the second part of the assignment students can choose to complete either a quantitative or qualitative data analysis. Please inform the module lead of which part 2 assessment you will be undertaking by Friday 12th December 2014.

PART 1 – research proposal (1,500 words; 40% of module mark)

Design a [quantitative/qualitative] research study related to your research area, and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this design in relation to [quantitative/qualitative] approaches.

Briefly describe your research interests, the research question(s), aims and objectives. (150 words)
How is your study related to the wider research field? (150 words)
Discuss why you chose your particular approach. (300 words)
Discuss why you chose a particular method of data collection and analysis for this particular study. (300 words)
Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this method. (200 words)
How will you analyse your data, what methods will you use? Justify your choice. (300 words)
How will you present your findings? (100 words)

Design a quantitative research study related to your research area, and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this design in relation to qualitative approaches.

Clearly outline the rationale for your proposed research project. Remember to critically analyse the advantages and limitations of the two approaches and justify the value of each approach in your research area of interest. Are they mutually exclusive? What is the philosophical perspective of your chosen approach; what does this allow you to find out, how does this influence sampling, data collection methods, types of data, types of analyses etc. Identify and distinguish the features of your chosen method.

Part 1 contributes 40% of the module mark. The purpose of this assignment is to allow students to explore the similarities and differences between quantitative and qualitative research paradigms and data analyses techniques commonly used within each approach specific to their research area of interest. Part 1 of the assignment addresses the following learning outcomes:

} Differentiate between quantitative and qualitative research methods and critically evaluate the advantages, limitations and appropriateness of particular forms of each analysis to address particular types of research issues in medicine and life sciences.

} Design, analyse and report the outcomes of the quantitative and qualitative data analysis methodologies covered in this course.
