The Movie, Children of Men

CINEMATOGRAPHY

After viewing Children of Men, click on the Cinematography Discussion Board forum below. W rite 200 words about how cinematography helps to express Lee’s vision and message. Things to consider might be:

  1. character/friends/family: How does the camera view different characters? What angles are used consistently? How about length of shots as in wide, medium close-up, etc.
  2. politics and race: big themes in this film
  3. the weather: the story uses the weather to raise the tension, to put external pressure on the characters and the city.

Part 2: After viewing Children of Men, write a second 200-word paragraph about the tour de force cinematography. There are impossibly long tracking/panning shots in this film. One is in the car when it is attacked by the forest people. Another is the escape from the building in Bexhill. You may write about the techniques of these shots as or about how the cinematography contributes to an immersive experience in this dark, dystopian world.
