Transformation of the Americas

Transformation of the Americas

Prepare: Chapter 1 discusses how in the year 1400, perhaps 50 million people or more lived in the Americas, completely isolated from the Old World of Eurasia and Africa. The peoples of Western Europe and West Africa were largely, though not completely, isolated from each other, and both had only limited interactions with the rest of the Old World. By 1600, however, the native population of the Americas had declined precipitously. Tens of thousands of West Africans had been transported to the New World as slaves, and Europeans dominated oceanic trade routes throughout much of the world and had established burgeoning settlements along much of the eastern coasts of the Americas.

Besides reading Chapter 1 in the textbook, please draw from the contents of one of the following videos:
•Dark Passages
•After the Mayflower

Reflect: As you read and view the assigned material, please contemplate the following points:
• The reasons, concerns, excitement, and fears white European settlers had moving to a “New World.”
• The uncertainty, curiosity, and fears of Native Americans as they encountered whites and Africans settling in their “Old World.”
• The fears and anger Africans had while being forced to live in a “New World.”

Write: How did the roles of Europeans, Africans, and Americans in the New World transform because of their encounters with each other? How did issues such as technologies, social and political organizations, biological transfers, economic motivations, and ideologies shape the transformation?
