Assignment 4

Creating a Proposal Using Work Groups

(20%=Group PowerPoint presentation 10%; Group Written Report 10%)
Purpose of Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to help students understand the importance of proposals in the world of work, to introduce students to the DAPEE model. Students will be able to understand the importance of teamwork in tackling tasks and projects, setting goals and objectives, dividing roles, following a timetable, and self evaluation.
Each group of students has to submit a PowerPoint presentation and a written report that details a proposal for a workgroup set up to accomplish specific goals within a definite timeframe in response to a specific problem.

Objectives

1. Students will be able to show their understanding of teamwork by developing a proposal.
2. Students will able to show their understanding of timetables and meeting deadlines.
3. Students will be able to show their understanding of the DAPEE model.
4. Students will be able to show their understanding of the importance of proposals.
5. Students will be able to show their understanding of group development.
6. Students will be able to demonstrate their leadership skills.
7. Students will be able to demonstrate their presentation skills.
8. Students will be able to show their understanding of different obstacles that hinder group development.
Requirements

PowerPoint Presentation

1. Time limit of 8 minutes
2. Group size limited to 3 students maximum
3. If a student is absent on the day of the presentation he will receive only 50% of his group’s grade
4. PowerPoint slides: 8 – 12 slides with 4 or 5 bullets on each slide
5. Prepare attractive slides that add to your presentation. Use a picture, table, graph or diagram on most of the slides.
6. Explain each key point on each of your slides
7. DO NOT cut and paste your report into your slides.
8. Students who fail to present their PP slides within 1 week of the BB deadline will receive no marks for this part of the assignment.
9. Include the following slides in your presentation:

Slide 1: Creating a Proposal Using Performance Teams or Workgroups
Title slide with the assignment name, students’ names and IDs, picture
Slide 2: Outline
Outline of the slides in your presentation.
Slide 3: The Project
Describe the DAPEE model and the project that is the focus of your proposal.
Slide 4: Analyzing the Problem
Describe a SWOT analysis of the project (2 strengths, 2weaknesses, 2 opportunities, 2 threats).
Slide 5: Planning the Solution
Include a workplan diagram showing tasks and deadlines. Describe the workplan. Also, include types of groups used, and the division of tasks.
Slide 6: Executing the Plan
Describe when the group will meet, reporting structures, and how the group will ensure all tasks are completed on time
Slide 7: Evaluating the Results
Discuss likely obstacles your group will face in the future, how you will handle social loafing, and how you will maintain group cohesiveness.
Slide 8: Summary
Summarize the key points from the slides. Do not simply cut and paste the Outline slide here.

Written Report

1. The report must use your own language and should specify the reference(s) from which the information is taken. If you cut and paste a sentence you must use quotation marks and write the author, year, and page number in brackets in the text after the quotation.

2. The report must:
• have a cover page
• use Times New Romans or Arial, font size: 12
• have a space of 1.5 between lines,
• be at least 4 full pages in length (not including the reference list)
• be written in the first person (use “I” or “my” or “our” or “we”)
• use topic sentences at the start of each paragraph
• use full sentences and paragraphs (not bullet points)
• have an Assessment Rubric
3. The report must use the following headings:

Introduction
Include a clear thesis statement, justify the importance of the assignment, a reference to justify assignment, outline what topics the report will cover (R)

The DAPEE Model
Briefly outline the DAPEE steps that your proposal will cover (R)

The Project
Describe the problem or project that is the focus of your proposal.

Analyzing the Project
Describe a SWOT analysis of the project (4 strengths, 4 weaknesses, 4 opportunities, 4 threats) (R)

Planning the Solution
Include a workplan diagram showing tasks and deadlines. Describe the workplan. Also, include types of groups used, and the division of tasks (R)

Executing the Plan
Describe when the group will meet, reporting structures, and how the group will ensure all tasks are completed on time (R)

Evaluating the Results
Discuss likely obstacles your group will face, how you will handle social loafing, and how you will maintain group cohesiveness (R)

Conclusion
Restate the thesis statement, include a summary of the key points from the body paragraphs, and say how these key points answer the assignment.

References
Include at least 3 references. The references can be from e-brary, books, newspapers, or the internet (but not lecture slides). You must cite the author and year in the body of the essay. Also, for each reference you must list the author, year, article or book title, and publisher under References at the end of the essay.

Notes about Scoring

• Each rubric contributes 10% of the total score, making a total score out of 20%.
Late Assignments

• If a BB copy of your assignment is between 1 day late and 7 days late – you will have 10% of marks deducted for each day late.
• If a BB copy of your assignment is more than 1 week late you will receive 0% marks.
