Format of Paper
Introduction In this opening page you state your position and define your terms. For example, “My position is that individuals should not engage in personal disclosures in the workplace. I will give three reasons supporting my claim. First, let’s define the two main concepts in the claim: personal disclosures and the workplace. “
Then in the introduction you would define what you mean by personal disclosures and what you mean by the workplace. I want you to use your textbook and possibly outside sources for your definitions.
Another example would be to state your position that women and men should establish more platonic friendships with members of the other sex. I will give three reasons supporting my claim. First, let’s define the main concept in my position: “platonic friendships.”
Body of Paper In the body of the paper you will list and explain the reasons supporting your claim. Your reasons need to be substantiated with expert testimony from the textbook, some other book on relationships and communication, or from a professional journal article. For example, you might say, “My first reason for claiming that women and men should establish more platonic friendships with each other is that such friendships lead to benefits that are not available in romantic relationships or friendships with members of one’s own sex (Monsour, 2002). In our textbook on page 386 McCornack makes the statement, “One of the most radical shifts in relationship patterns over the last few decades has come with the increase in platonic (nonsexual) friendships between women and men in the United States.”
In the body of the paper you should also identify what you believe might be the biggest objection to the claim you are making. For example, what do you think might be the biggest objection to the claim that women and men should form more platonic friendships?
In this last section of your paper, about half a page, you summarize what your paper has been about and then draw a few general and synthesizing conclusions.
