The murder case I selected is the Columbine High School massacre perpetrated by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. On April 20, 1999, Harris and Klebold entered their high school armed with guns, explosives and homemade bombs, killing 12 of their peers as well as one teacher before committing suicide. The attack was premeditated—Harris and Klebold had planned it out for over a year in advance. It remains one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history to date.
This event sparked national conversations around gun control laws, mental health awareness and the effects of bullying on teenagers’ mental health. In addition to sparking new campaigns around these topics, it also made active shooter drills commonplace at schools across the United States. For this analysis I will be using two sources: “Columbine High School Massacre” by Tyler Marriner from Encyclopedia Britannica (www.britannica.com/event/Columbine-High-School-massacre) & “The Columbine Shooting” by Jennifer Rosenberg from ThoughtCo (www.thoughtco.com/the-columbine-shooting-3971725). According to Marriner's account published in Encyclopedia Britannica, prior to entering the school on April 20th 1999 Harris and Klebold had rigged several propane tanks with explosives which were intended to cause an even greater death toll but failed due to being improperly constructed . They also set up multiple pipe bombs throughout both floors of the school; some detonated while others did not explode due to a lack of proper construction or placement within buildings or near victims' bodies . In addition they were armed with shotguns, pistols and knives which they used indiscriminately during their rampage through classrooms shooting students at random . Rosenberg's article notes that approximately 150 shots were fired during their attack lasting approximately 45 minutes before they turned their weapons on themselves ending the scene in tragedy . During this time many students hid under desks or behind objects while others attempted escape via windows into nearby fields where they could find help . Once emergency personnel made it inside they discovered 13 dead including both perpetrators who had shot themselves after fatally injuring most of their victims . In conclusion what began as a tragedy ended up becoming an example for preventative measures taken against future threats facing America's schools among other things such as increased mental health awareness programs initiatives targeting bullying violence prevention guidelines etc aimed at improving safety within educational environments nationwide . Although little can be done about those lost that day we must remember them when working towards making our world safer for everyone involved now & into tomorrow's future generations so that similar tragedies do not occur again anytime soon if ever again
