Background Information: Born in England in 1899, died in the US in 1980. Alfred Hitchcock is certainly known as the master of suspense and his films differ greatly from today’s mystery or horror films. Perhaps the primary reason his work stands out lies in the fact that he engaged the audience so effectively with his meticulously planned work. In a Hitchcock film, much of the suspense is played out in the viewer’s mind; Hitchcock did an incredible job of convincing you that you had seen more than you actually had on film. However, that is not the primary reason for viewing his work within the context of an Art Appreciation course. As you watch a Hitchcock film, I want you to observe it as a visual feast. Many preparatory drawings were done prior to filming and it has been said that Hitchcock visualized every single shot before he began filming. His films are literally composed of thousands of perfectly composed images. Enjoy Hitchcock both as a storyteller and as a masterful visual artist.
