Choose a situation you are familiar with from your own life, from the news, or from
anything you have viewed or read outside of class, in which some form of identity (race, gender,
citizenship, sexuality, etc.) affects what happened. Then choose a part of any of the posted materials
in the class that provides an example of how to think about identity socially. Discuss how the class
material you have chosen provides ways to think about the situation.
Examples:
– Situation: playing soccer in a youth league. Class material: Anderson, “The White Space.”
– Situation: going to court for a traffic ticket. Class material: Ferguson: A Report from Occupied
Territory
– Situation: your grandparents’ experience of immigration. Class material: Urrea, “Nobody’s Son”
