An Hour With Abuelo

At the beginning of “An Hour With Abuelo,” Arturo is reluctant to visit his grandfather in assisted living and only relents when his mother pleads with him for “just one hour, una hora” (Colfer 1). By the end, Arturo gains a new perspective on his grandfather after discovering the hardships that Abuelo overcame. However, he soon realizes that Abuelo does not need his attention: In fact, Abuelo has taken time out of his busy schedule to see Arturo and is happy to get back to his own life when the hour is over. Do you think this story contains a message for young people about appreciating their elders or a message to older people about maintaining their independence? In terms of your own experience, do you identify more with Arturo or Abuelo?
