Does it make sense to you that a culture (like the ancient Greeks) would define themselves by the sports that they play? Should we put sports in the same kind of anthropological category (i.e. “custom”) as, say, diet, language or religion? Isn’t there something fundamentally frivolous about sports that we don’t find in other culture-defining customs?
