Presentation of Scholarly Work Are We There Yet? Just as we were excited to start the journey, we are just as excited to be almost there. The process of disseminating evidence-based practice presentations to colleagues in the healthcare environment will be performed by preparing and presenting your PowerPoint presentation (PPT) to your peers. One of the requirements for the course is to present your Capstone Project to your peers. This is just the beginning of the road to more professional presentations in your career as a nurse executive or educator. Nurses represent nursing in a variety of settings; the most common of these is through attendance at professional nursing meetings. Presentations require effective communication skills at various levels. This requires the nurse to be able to develop a clear message both verbally and nonverbally; to use effective presentation methods, such as PowerPoint slides; to use a storytelling approach; and to demonstrate a professional appearance in dress and in body language. These communication skills empower the nurse to disseminate scholarly work and evidence-based practice to colleagues. Tips for Presentations How does one prepare for a presentation? Just as we planned the trip, destination, or route to take on our MSN journey, one also plans the presentation. In this case, the destination is the topic of your Capstone Project. Think about the type of meeting, time of day, and the image you want to exhibit. Who is your audience and what message do you want to convey? It is important to plan for this since the presentation’s length and content should be considered. Make an outline of the presentation considering the objectives, audience, location, and amount of time allotted. Next, develop the content for the slides. Think about what audiovisuals would support the content. As you are preparing the slides, use a clear font, not a fancy one that is distracting and difficult for the audience to read. Make sure that the lines of the slides will be legible from a distance and that the slide design is not distracting. Avoid the use of all capital letters. This implies shouting, is hard to read, and is not visually engaging. Remember the five by seven rule: five to seven lines per slide with five to seven words per line. The purpose of the bulleted information on the slides is to provide summarized information. You do not want to fill the slide with paragraphs of information. Carefully proofread the presentation to avoid spelling and grammatical errors. Prior to giving this presentation to an audience in person, practice, practice, practice! Practice presenting it in front of a mirror, changing the slides, and staying within the time factor. By practicing the presentation, one can keep in mind the time factor, because the actual presentation will take longer than expected. Don’t try to memorize the presentation and don’t read each slide word for word. Use speaker notes to supplement the content on the slides. If you plan to distribute copies of your presentation electronically or as handouts, make sure the copies are legible. The handout needs to include the same information as the presentation, including citations, if applicable. If the presentation is being used for continuing education credit, include your credentials and information from your resume (Finkelman & Kenner, 2010). Summary Giving effective presentations is one way in which nurses may influence the image of nursing. Evidence-based practice can be disseminated among colleagues to advance nursing roles within the healthcare environment through professional presentations.
