Archaeology Practicum

Archaeology Practicum The Garbage Project The fabled Garbage Project has extended its study to Southern Illinois and is interested in employing archaeological methods to reconstruct consumption patterns for residents in the Carbondale area. Phil Juncman, the director of the project, has selected you to fill one of his coveted research assistantships. You are responsible for analyzing a portion of the recently produced material record, or, in other words, the contents of two trash cans. You will produce a report with your conclusions for Juncman. The trash cans, that archeologists call "features," are located next to the anthropology department. The anthropology department is located on the Third Floor of Faner Hall, above the Museum. The trash cans are in a display case beside Room 3438, in front of anthropology students' lounge room. You are to conduct a detailed analysis of the features and support your interpretations on the basis of these observations. Assume that the trash was accumulated at a normal rate over a couple of weeks. Your report needs to fully answer the following questions: 1. Construct a complete inventory of the artifacts visible in the profiles in features A & B. 2. Based on your inventories, discuss the range of activities represented in the two features. 3. In each of the features, list two cases in which you are able to reconstruct which objects were deposited first. In each of the features list two cases in which such a reconstruction is not obvious. 4. Prepare a description of the individuals who might have produced this trash and the location and co nditio ns under which it may have been deposited. Your answer should include a discussion on age, sex, and number of individuals represented. You should also assess (when appropriate) diet, personal habits, socioeconomic status, and time of year the trash was deposited. 5. Would you be able to make the same description you produced in number 4 if you only had the smaller feature to examine? If not, what information would be lacking if you could only analyze the smaller feature? Your first paragraph should be an introduction to the project. Then you should cover all of the above points for the assignment in a logical order. Feel free to expand beyond these points but you must answer everything included h ere. End the proj ect with a conclusion, summarizing the results and the reasons behind them. This project report is to be at least three pages long, typed, double-spaced, 12-point font, and in compositional form. The margins should be no larger than one inch. You must answer all of the above questions.
