Pitbulls have become a hot-button topic when it comes to the discussion of canine aggression. The media has painted pitbulls in a negative light, leading many people to believe that these dogs are inherently aggressive and dangerous. However, research indicates that this is not necessarily true. Pitbulls are no more aggressive than other breeds of dogs; instead, their reputation is largely due to irresponsible owners who have trained them to be aggressive or used them in dog fighting.
One scientific study published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior found that pitbulls were actually less likely than other breeds to show signs of aggression towards strangers and unfamiliar animals (1). Furthermore, while they can be territorial around their homes and loved ones, as is common with any breed of dog, this behavior can be managed through consistent training. When given proper care and attention, pit bulls can make loyal and loving companions for years to come. In addition to being misunderstood by society at large, pit bulls also face significant levels of discrimination from landlords, pet stores, insurance companies and others (2). This unfairly limits opportunities for responsible owners who would otherwise provide an appropriate home environment for these dogs. Unfortunately some people blame “pit bull type” dogs for any incident involving canine aggression regardless if another breed was involved or not which only serves to further stigmatize what is already an unfairly maligned breed . Ultimately it is important to remember that any animal’s behavior depends heavily on its environment and how it has been treated by its owner over time; blaming one particular breed will never get us closer towards understanding the complexities surrounding canine aggression (3). Therefore we must look past preconceived notions about certain types of dogs if we truly want our communities safe from all forms of violence--both human and animal alike. Pit bulls do deserve special attention because they have unfortunately become targets for ignorant individuals looking for a guard dog or an intimidating pet; however we should focus on punishing such harmful behaviors rather than condemning an entire breed based off faulty beliefs perpetuated by sensationalized media coverage (4). A better approach would involve providing education about responsible ownership practices as well as support programs designed specifically with pit bull owners in mind so that those wanting companionship from these remarkable animals may receive the necessary guidance along their journey towards becoming loving guardians themselves . Ultimately there is no single answer regarding whether or not pit bulls are naturally aggressive; rather it depends on several different factors including socialization , genetics ,and most importantly how they have been treated throughout their life span . While each individual case may vary greatly depending upon personal circumstances , overall statistics indicate that on average pit bulls are no more predisposed toward violence then any other breed making them just as suitable candidates for adoption as any other domestic pet .
