In 2010, James Madison University’s University Program Board (an event planning group run by students) invited the reality star, Snooki, to come to campus and speak. Typically the university would have comedians and musicians come, so Snooki was an unusual choice. The response was not a positive one.
The student, Andrew Reese, wrote an article for the student paper responding to the backlash of this celebrity choice. Another student then analyzed Reese’s argument in that newspaper article.
Why do we read this? It’s important to see student writing and the level that’s expected. Our analysis piece here, from Adrian Jarvis, is a paper that received attention in GWRTC 103, the JMU equivalent of our class. We can then see how a strong student paper comes across, and also where the issues sneak in. Keep in mind, you can also see points where the author discusses ethos, pathos and logos, but in subtle ways. Your upcoming paper will also ask you to perform this kind of rhetorical analysis.
What do I want you to do with this? Analyze the piece, “Turning the Tables on the Blame Game” and whether or not you believe the author did a good job of reviewing the newspaper article. What did the author do well in his/her analysis? What is missing here in your opinion? Is there any bias sneaking in? What would you have done differently?
In a short essay of 700 words, describe three things the author did well and at least two things you think should have been done differently.
Both question 1 and 2 should be on separate pages. Thank You
