Most of D.B.’s relatives have developed type 2 diabetes by the time they are in the 60s. D.B. is determined that
this will not happen to him so he has always avoided sweets and kept his carbohydrate intake low. He eats
mostly meats, cheese, fruits, and vegetables and only small amounts of bread, tortillas, rice, and baked goods.
He assumed that this way of eating would help him maintain a healthy weight, but he’s now almost 40 and his
weight has gradually crept up 40 lbs in the last 10 years.
1) Why do you think D.B. is gradually gaining weight?
2) What changes could D.B. make to reverse his gradual weight gain as well as decreasing his risk of
developing type 2 diabetes.

juice and eating soup and crackers.
3) Is E.M.’s food intake appropriate while she recovers?
4) What would you recommend to E.M. to make sure she gets the nutrients she needs?
