Assessing the damage

In this assignment you will tabulate damage done to archaeological sites in a Middle Eastern country of your
choice. There are many causes of destruction: war, construction projects for housing, roads and especially
dams, farming, looting and vandalism unrelated to war. Your goal is to assess the relative frequency of each.
You will use Google Earth, but you will also need to go back in time as far as possible (i.e. before the internet!),
assemble a photographic record, from long before the war to now. This will most likely start with original site
reports, but you will also find pictures from the photographic archives of places like Penn museum and the OI
available on-line. Construct a simple excel data base, listing sites on the vertical axis and causes on the
horizontal. This is Part One of your task. In Part Two you should interpret the results, proposing specific
policies in remediation. Construct your policies as if you are presenting them to UNESCO
