As you have gone through the unit on Native American literature, you have read a lot about the practice of
assimilation. Select a character from the novel Tracks and, in 1000 words reflect on how he or she deals with
the pressures of assimilation. You must use examples from the novel in the form of direct quotes with in-text
citations. In addition, you may draw on any other material you have read or viewed in class up to this point. No
outside texts will be permitted, and the use of outside sources will result in a 10 point deduction per source!! To
decide which character you might focus on, you should examine how each major character reacts to the social
pressure to assimilate into white culture. You are expected to bring in literary elements – like similes,
metaphors (check the Literary Terms in Course Content), plot, or setting – that help readers understand how
this character is dealing with assimilation.
