It was not until 1877 when Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli reported his observations with a telescope which showed linear features he called “canali” (translated to channels) that speculation began about whether or not there was some form of intelligent life present on Mars. Since then numerous space missions have been launched in order to determine if conditions on Mars are suitable for sustaining life forms similar to those found here on Earth.
