Australian parliament and The department of immigration
choose ONE of the following essay questions:
1- A member of the Australian parliament makes the following public statement: “Since the closure of mental institutions, the community has been over-run with dangerous people who do not get
the care they need. Like it or not, they need to be kept separately from the rest of the community for everybody’s good.” Discuss the various elements of this statement, and whether and how you
think mental health professionals have an ethical obligation to respond.
2- The department of immigration and border protection refers a nine-year-old child from a family seeking permanent residency in Australia to a mental health professional for assessment. The
child demonstrates features of developmental disability and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. This diagnosis will result in the family’s application for residency being declined and their
deportation. Discuss the ethical challenges posed by this situation, and what you see as being the appropriate course action by the clinician involved.
