  Introduction The generational and demographical differences between myself and the person I interviewed are vast. I am a 24 year old, Gen-Z female who grew up in a suburban town in New Jersey while my interviewee is an 82 year old Boomer male who grew up in rural North Carolina. Technology and My Life: Curlers to Chainsaws Chapter 1 - Hair Care Technology at Home I selected my experience with curling irons to compare it to the experiences that were described in the book From Curlers to Chainsaws by Janice Radway chapter one, “Hair Care Technology at Home”. This chapter talked about how hair care technologies transformed women’s routine beauty activities such as brushing, combing, cutting and styling their hair from 1820-1980. It also discussed how these technological advancements impacted gender roles within society as well as issues around race, class and culture related to beauty standards for women within those same time periods. My experience with curling irons started when I was 12 years old living at home with my parents where we had access to all kinds of new hair tools like blow dryers, straighteners and curling wands that made it much easier create different looks than before without needing someone else’s help or skill set. After playing around with these tools for awhile though I quickly learned just how much time it took me get ready compared to what other people could do easily in a few minutes! These devices gave me more freedom but also imposed high expectations on me if I wanted to look good going out so there was always this tension between wanting more control over my look but also feeling like I needed outside validation from others which strongly reflects some of the themes described in Radway's chapter "Hair Care Technology at Home". Technology & My Interviewee's Life: The Inner Life of Devices Chapter 4 - Digital Photography Technologies I chose digital photography technologies for comparison because they have been around since my early twenties while they are something relatively new for my interviewee who remembers using polaroids when he was younger but now uses his iPhone camera quite often nowadays. The Inner Life of Devices by John Marder touches upon similar topics relating to digital photography technology such as its role changing our relationship with memory through capturing moments that would otherwise vanish into thin air (chapter 4). Since then, digital cameras have become ubiquitous due mostly because phones now all come equipped with them so almost anyone can capture memories anytime anywhere which is something very different from what growing up used looked like even just twenty years ago! For example, back then you wouldn't see many elderly people having any kind of camera let alone a quality one whereas now you'll find plenty walking around snapping pictures here there everywhere! This sudden shift has brought about interesting conversations surrounding memory making especially given the fact that older generations may still feel uncomfortable taking pictures near certain landmarks or areas deemed unsafe due worry about being judged or photographed themselves whereas younger generations don't think twice about doing so which brings up issues regarding identity construction along side technological advancement too!
