A culture of safety is one in which patient safety is prioritized and seen as a shared responsibility among all healthcare professionals. Values that ensure this type of environment include accountability, transparency, communication, collaboration,
and learning from mistakes (IHI, 2020). Healthcare facilities should strive to create an atmosphere where these values are actively supported by staff and leadership. This can be accomplished through education on the importance of patient safety and effective teamwork. Effective communication strategies such as open dialogue between clinicians and non-clinicians should also be implemented to help foster a culture of safety (AHRQ, 2019).
The nurse's role in maintaining a culture of safety is essential for promoting safe practices. Nurses must be aware of their own actions when caring for patients and understand how their behavior contributes to the overall safety environment within the facility or organization (IHI, 2020). Nurses need to promote a sense of trust amongst other members within the healthcare team so that any issues or concerns related to patient care can be identified promptly. Additionally, nurses should make use of available resources such as error reporting systems or risk assessment tools to support early identification and intervention with potential errors before they lead to harm (AHRQ, 2019). It is important for nurses to take ownership over quality improvement initiatives within their workplace settings that are designed with improving patient outcomes in mind.
