    In Benjamin Saez’s “In the Borderlands of Chicano Identity, There are Only Fragments”, he argues that the term Chicana/o is so diverse and fragmented that it has lost any meaningful definition. He discusses how a single definition or concept of what it means to be Chicana/o can no longer be established given its diversity and multifaceted nature. Saez takes into account both historical and cultural influences as well as individual experiences in order to develop his argument.
Saez begins by discussing the various ways in which being Chicana/o has been defined throughout history based on common factors such as language, culture, ethnicity, national origin and even political associations. Firstly she discussed how some people view being associated with this type of label more positively than others due mainly because they feel empowered by having ownership over their ethnic heritage while also recognizing their connection with multiple communities simultaneously (i.e., Mexican American). Furthermore she pointed out language barriers often prevent Chicanos from connecting with other members within their own community unless they share similar linguistic backgrounds which contributes heavily towards increased fragmentation within the group overall thus making unification difficult if not impossible altogether depending on geographical region(s) occupied by said population(s). Lastly she highlighted certain negative stereotypes placed upon those who do identify themselves under such banner regardless if they fit all characteristics required--or lack thereof--by traditional non-Latinx standards which could ultimately hurt potential progress toward achieving greater unity amongst all people united under same umbrella label (i.e., "Chicano"). Based on my evaluation I would say that although I agree with much of Saez’s claims regarding fragmentation within "Chicano" identity I think there is still hope for finding common ground amongst those who take part in such discourse despite differing perspectives since we live in an age where technology allows us access beyond our physical boundaries allowing us opportunity foster communication between parties regardless location which ultimately encourages dialogue between groups battling for relevancy
