Notes on Lab ReportBIOL 440 (Microbiology Lab)Your lab report should follow the format outlined below.
Keep your paper concise but include all necessary information. Your intent should be to present your experiment clearly and concisely. FORMAT TITLE: A sentence/phrase describing the experiment. This will be your cover page.ABSTRACT: Condense your experiment and report to one short statement of approximately 4 or 5 sentences. Describe the purpose of the experiment, the methods used, and significant results and findings. Use the past tense and passive voice. Introduction: State some background information on the issue you are investigating. This is used for original research i.e. an experiment that has not been done before. Therefore, this section does not apply to your experiment. Do not include this section in your report. Materials and Methods: This section should allow the reader to duplicate your experiment. Usually, it includes the detail of the experiment so that other people can follow. In your case, keep it very brief because the procedures that you are using (isolation, staining, biochemical tests) are very well known procedures. This section should be half a page at the most. Use the past tense and passive voice. Results:
Describe the data in words and use tables, charts, graphs, pictures, drawings, etc. Show only your results.
Do not include judgments, conclusions, or lists of sources of errors in this section. This section includes only your results. Discussion: Discuss your results and indicate what they mean. Discuss the techniques that were used in your experiment; such as, streak plate, selective/differential media, biochemical tests and briefly elaborate on those techniques. Tell the reader why you use them, what do they show, and briefly describe how they work. State how did you arrive at your conclusion? Did you encounter any problem? If yes, how did you resolve it? Include a few important clinical/environmental significances regarding your unknown organism.
Published scientific articles also include the following sections. I leave it optional for your report:Conclusion:
Give your main conclusions of the experiment. You can list them in a format of bullet points. Acknowledgments: Thank whoever helped with your experimentReferences: Cite references or sources used in your paper.
