Book review

Book review Order Description IAH 202: Europe and the World Hassan Fall 2014 Reading Review Portfolio Assignment (30% = 90pts) Write 5 short reading review essays on 5 different books assigned for the class. Each review essay will focus on a specific section, chapter or feature of an assigned book. You will want to summarize briefly the main topic of the book and give information about the author in the introductory paragraph, but each review essay should not be a summary of the entire book. The review will want to develop a central point about the book. To illustrate central point, you will quote from 2-3 key short passages from the book and discuss the significance of the passages as they relate to the central idea. Each review essay will be about 2 pages double-spaced. The total reading review portfolio will be approximately 10 pages in length double-spaced. Below is a sample outline of a reading review: Paragraph 1: Introduction (mention book title, author, date of publication, main topic and announce the central point of the review. Paragraph 2: Discuss the central point of the review and its significance within the book. (sample central points for Pagden might be the following: the idea of civilization in the history of European Empires; the role of Christianity in Empires; the legacy of the classical Empires of Greece and Rome in the early modern and modern Empires, etc.) Paragraph 3: Discuss a brief passage (2-3 lines) from the book. Begin by introducing the passage, then quote the passage, and then analyze the passage as it relates to the central idea. Paragraph 4: Discuss another brief passage (2-3 lines) from the book. Begin by introducing the passage, then quote the passage, and then analyze the passage as it relates to the central idea. Paragraph 5: Conclude by assessing the interest of the book and its treatment of the central point. For example, if the central point is the role of Christianity in early modern and modern Europe empires, they would say something like the following: Pagden effectively illustrates the different ways that Christianity served both to justify wars in the colonies against the native populations who were deemed subhuman and also as force of civilization that recognized the humanity of the natives. . . . Even though the Reading Review Portfolio is a collection of personal reflections on the books, each review should be written in formal prose, discuss details from the texts, provide information about the book (title, author, date of publication, etc.) and cite the page number of quoted passages. This assignment is an important part of your academic work for this class and the quality of the writing counts. Include a bibliography at the end of the assignment documenting all sources including the assigned readings. Please use one of the following formats for the bibliography: MLA, APA, or Chicago.
