CARBON DEMOCRACY
Order Description
Question 1.
In Carbon Democracy, Timothy Mitchell argues that the world is facing “twin crises” (6)
that will radically change our current ways of living, and in particular our current forms
of political and economic life: the end of oil abundance and global climate change. What
has been the role of crisis in shaping our world today, and how might the future look in
the context of these twin crises? In addition to Timothy Mitchell, use at least two
theorists from after the first exam to construct an argument about the relationship
between crisis and political and economic change.
Question 2.
In Carbon Democracy, Timothy Mitchell argues that the governance of capitalist nations
via ‘the economy’ and later ‘the market’ limit the ability of citizens to make democratic
claims. What has been the relationship between democracy and capitalism since the end
of World War II? Has capitalism promoted democracy or inhibited democracy? How? In
addition to Mitchell, use at least two theorists from after the first exam to make your
argument.
