In México the Days of the Dead are holidays where our diseased loved ones are remembered and honored
with altars, sugar skulls and their favorite foods. With its rare mix of pre-Hispanic and Roman Catholic rituals, it
is also a perfect illustration of the synthesis of pre-Hispanic and Spanish cultures that has come to define
México and its people. In addition of discussing how the Days of the Dead are celebrated in México we
compare and contrast these beliefs to other cultures.
Perhaps the most unique characteristic of the Mexican celebration of the Día de los Muertos (Days of the
Dead) is the presence of joy – a feeling rarely associated with death.- This is because during this celebration,
death is symbolically abolished. Using digital illustrations as well as rare film footage, Gregorio Luke will
transport his audience to México and recreate the Day of the Dead tradition.
