Child Interview

Step 1: Interview Just transcribe exactly what happened during the interview ○ Conduct a brief interview (conversation) with the child. Take detailed notes, and provide your notes in an Appendix. The goal is to get to know the child, beyond just what you observed for the checklist. Depending on age, you can ask them questions: Example: What is your favorite color? Favorite activity? What do you like to play with at school? Who do you live with? Does mom go to the dentist often? Have you ever got a lollipop from the dentist? What is your favorite flavor? I collected some candy from trick and treat on halloween? What did you dress up as? You can ask the child to role play with them to learn more about the child. What is your favorite holiday? Etc. can be similar.. Feel free to add any other questions you think would be helpful. This is a made up narrative. If the child cannot respond to verbal prompts, you can ask them to draw a picture, and/or role play with them to learn more about the child. Step 2: Interview summary and reflection (1 page) ○ Write an objective summary of the interview in narrative form. ■Begin with a description of the child (age, gender, school, grade if applicable). Discuss where you conducted the interview, and any physical behaviors you or the child engaged in that may not be evident in the interview transcript.
