Introduction Is the first paragraph of an essay Give overview of essay topic Capture the interest of the reader Must contain a thesis statement The thesis statement Applies to whole essay States the main point or argument of an essay Has topic and controlling idea Your thesis statement is the single most important aspect of your paper. If you don’t have one your paper is in serious trouble before you even start. I can almost guarantee that if you have no thesis idea, your paper will meander, unfocused and disorganized, all over the place before coming to an unsatisfactory end. 2. Body Includes; Examples; Statistics; Quotes (Sources) Made up of several paragraphs Each and every paragraph should have a Topic Sentence The topic sentence gives notice of what the paragraph is about Has topic and controlling idea Helpful warning - Don’t merely retell the narrative 3. Conclusion Signals the end of the essay, thus a concluding transition signal is needed Reminds reader of your thesis and main points Leaves the reader with your final thoughts on the topic Helpful warning - Don’t introduce new information in conclusion In-Text Citations (MLA) Author name in Sentence – cite text page number eg Wordsworth stated that Romantic poetry was marked by a "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (263). Author not mentioned – cite author name and text page number eg. Romantic poetry is characterized by the "spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings" (Wordsworth 263). Helpful warning – If citing from a WWW source, unless the url ends with .edu it is unlikely to be an acceptable academic source Bibliography (Works cited page) Alphabetical order - Lastname, Firstname, Title of Book, Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication. Eg. Henley, Patricia, The Hummingbird House, Denver: MacMurray, 1999. Print
