Dana Assignment Compare and contrast Dana’s voyages on the Pilgrim and Alert with the Portuguese voyages in the Estado da India (from Spence, Matteo Ricci chapter) and/or with the voyages of the Margaret, Cygnet, or others (from McDonald, Pirates). What conditions/opportunities/constraints (if any) remained consistent over time and space? What were the major differences? Some things to consider: type of vessel, length of voyage, purpose of voyage, composition/size of crew, maritime labor, organization of the vessel/voyage, discipline and punishment, social/cultural practices, life/labor at sea versus on shore, ecological/environmental conditions, cross-cultural interactions, attitudes/discourse toward “the other” (non-Euro-Americans), etc.
