Defining development: Poverty, freedom and the future

What does the word development imply and how does this relate to the concept of poverty? Is the solution to poverty economic growth and if so, how do we measure this? what does development have to do with human lives? Is it always a good thing, for everyone? who decides what is development and why? is it a linear process? Amartya Sen describes development as being integrally related to freedom; what does this really mean? what is the opposite of development?
