Demographics and needs

Demographics and needs vary from state to state and district to district. Research the trends and prevalence of disability categories being served in your state and describe them to the class. Explain where you located this information and discuss what you can conclude about the needs of students in your state based upon this information. Explain how knowing this type of information can help you plan instruction to maximize the learning of all students. In replies to peers, discuss trends, or lack of trends, in the types of disability prevalence and explain why you think these similarities/differences occur from state to state.

I live in Texas, and the Texas Education Agency (TEA) provides information regarding students with disabilities. According to TEA’s most recent data from 2020-21, there are 834,841 public school students with disabilities enrolled in prekindergarten through grade twelve. Of those students, almost half have a specific learning disability at 45%, followed by speech impairments (16%), intellectual disabilities (13%), autism spectrum disorder (9%), deaf or hearing impairments (7%), orthopedic impairments (4%), visual impairments (3%) and traumatic brain injury/other neurological impairments (<1%).
Texas is also home to approximately 20% of all English language learners in the United States who may need additional support due to language barriers. Additionally, while TEA does not track the prevalence of mental illness as a disability specifically, it is estimated that one out of five children has some type of serious mental health issue that can impact their academic performance. Knowing this information about the types of disabilities served in Texas gives me an idea about how I should plan instruction for my students. For example, I can be more mindful about creating lessons that are accessible to every student regardless of their abilities or needs so everyone has an equal chance to learn effectively. This includes designing multi-modal activities that allow for different ways for addressing content material such as auditory lectures combined with visuals and hands-on activities. It is also important for me to ensure that my classroom environment is positive and supportive since research shows this helps foster better learning outcomes across all areas including academics, social skills and behavior management among others. The same analysis conducted on other states show similar results but vary slightly depending on location which could be attributed several factors such as socio-economic status or population size within each district. For example, New York City Public Schools reported higher rates of autism compared to other states which could indicate a larger concentration of residents being served under an autism diagnosis within NYC schools compared others across the country even though they serve similar populations overall because it is located within the largest city in America
