Development in Popular Culture

Development in Popular Culture analyze ten (10) single daily comic strips, characters from TV shows, movies, books, video games or even toys themselves, and cite similarities to theories of developmental psychology and lifespan development. For example, a recent comic strip of “Hi and Lois” depicted a toddler carrying on a conversation with the sun. What would Piaget call this behavior? Is it typical of children that age? What other theories or concepts may apply? How would Erikson interpret a strip in which a teenager cannot decide whether he wants to be president or an NBA superstar? How does Sesame Street remind you of Vygotsky’s theories, or are sit-coms and movie relationships reflective of real adult relationships? Try to find comics or other references that relate to EACH of the lifespan periods covered in the six units of the course. Include graphics or pictures, or in the case of comic strips, the strips themselves.
