Diagnosis and Treatment of Hyperpigmented Macules

A woman enters the Victoria University Dermal Therapy Teaching Clinic presenting with the following. She notes that she has suffered acne breakouts on and off for the last few years, and now that her breakouts are under control, she is concerned about the scarring that remains. Upon questioning, she notes that she is of African-American background, never burns and always tans with ease. Outline Students are required to research and discuss the above case study with reference to knowledge gained in Advanced Laser and Light 1. Students will provide an analysis of the scenario and present a discussion in the form of a written assignment (2000 words). Discussion Points - Explain the possible aetiology and pathogenesis of the hyperpigmented macules - Discuss a method for treating the hyperpigmented macules with a laser or light device and develop a treatment plan accordingly - Discuss the wound healing processes that follows post procedure - Discuss the risks and potential complications following the chosen procedure - Briefly discuss how favourable outcomes for this procedure have been achieved due to recent research and changes in practice Assignment Outcomes On completion of research, students will be able to: - Apply knowledge of melanin, melanogenesis and pigment disorders to differentially diagnose pigmented lesions - Apply knowledge of the aetiology and pathogenesis of the diagnosed pigmented lesions to discuss the origin of these hyperpigmented macules - Apply knowledge of different wavelengths of laser and light, their absorption spectrum and target chromophores to choose an appropriate treatment for the presenting macules - Apply knowledge of the mechanism of action of the chosen laser or light based device to discuss its efficacy - Review literature and guidelines to develop a treatment plan suitable for darker Fitzpatrick skin types - Apply knowledge of the wound healing process to describe the cellular processes that occur post procedure - Develop knowledge of the risks and complications associated with treating pigment disorders in darker Fitzpatrick skin types
