Sample Solution
Positioning and the use of different positions during labor are important because they can help manage pain, assist with fetal descent, reduce the risk of complications and provide comfort. Position changes can help the baby move down into the pelvis and make room for contractions to be more effective. Studies have shown that women who changed position every few minutes during labor were able to push their babies out faster than those who stayed in one position (Patterson et al., 2018).
It is beneficial for both mom and baby as it helps increase blood flow to the uterus, allowing more oxygen-rich blood to reach your baby (American Pregnancy Association). Additionally, using different positions provides a sense of control over what may otherwise feel like an overwhelming experience. Women should discuss any concerns regarding positioning with their health care provider prior to delivering so that they can make informed decisions about what works best for them. The most common positions used during labor include semi-reclining, squatting on hands/knees or against a wall, standing upright or leaning into a partner's chest (Kong & Walshak , 2019).
