Disasters in the community
Think about disasters your community has or could potentially face. Now, think about how your community is helping its members prepare.
Explore your community and find an advertisement that represents helping community members be prepared for a disaster.
Examples could be a billboard, poster at a bus stop, marquee sign, flyer, yard sign and more. Example: Sign advertising 'free' flu vaccinations at a local pharmacy.
Upload that picture into the discussion.

Describe the message the advertisement is conveying.
Describe how the message impact preparedness.
If you cannot find any advertisement in your community, describe a type of advertisement for disaster preparedness you think would be most beneficial to your community and how it would be best conveyed.
Next, identify one community setting that is impacted by the disaster advertisement you shared
Settings:
Correctional facilities
Home health
Schools
Forensic areas
Hospice
Faith communities
Occupational health
Analyze at least one nursing role (refer to Week 6 lesson) related to disaster preparedness in that setting. Example: In the school setting, what actions and interventions would be involved with the nurse as coordinator of disaster preparedness?
Identify at least one key stakeholder related to the setting that a CHN could collaborate with regarding disaster preparedness. Include why this collaboration is important.
Sample Solution
The advertisement I shared is a yard sign promoting free flu vaccinations at a local pharmacy. The message being conveyed is that taking preventative measures such as getting the flu vaccine can help protect individuals from getting sick and potentially reduce further
spread of illnesses in the community. This message impacts preparedness by addressing the importance of prevention, emphasizing that preparing for a disaster may start with something as simple as getting vaccinated or washing your hands regularly.
One community setting impacted by this advertisement is home health. Nurses working in home health are responsible for creating plans to ensure clients they care for have access to reliable healthcare during disasters so they can maintain their health and wellness. They must also coordinate activities related to public education on disaster management, develop protocols for responder handling, provide guidance on mental health needs and collaborate with organizations present in their communities about disaster preparedness programs.
A key stakeholder related to the home health setting that a CHN could collaborate with regarding disaster preparedness is emergency responders (e.g., ambulance services, police departments). Collaboration between nurses and emergency responders is important because it allows nurses to establish relationships with those who will be responding should an incident occur, allowing them opportunities to discuss how best to communicate planned response scenarios prioritizations and resources needs for any given situation within their own service area which will ultimately increase readiness when responding to potential disasters within the community.
