Order Description
Consider these three characteristics of Elvis:
A presence:
-First artist to really live like a rock and roll star, at one point he traveled with his own personal jeweler. Elevated the rock star to someone of supreme
importance, paving the way for Beatles
Image:
-greased hair and pompadour, sexually charged gyrations and movements on stage-progresses to the seventies Las Vegas style Elvis cliché
Voice:
-Not black, not white, but blacker than white, Elvis sounds like Elvis. He was a tremendous listener and his style is combination of blues, R&B, black and white
gospel, country, pop, musicals, and classical music
The Greil Marcus article (Mystery Train) notes that what made Elvis so important is that we (people of that generation) saw themselves in Elvis (flawed, human, etc.).
Considering the above characteristics, does this describe, say, Michael Jackson or Justin Timberlake? Is this a formula for the creation of a modern popstar?
