Discussion questions Order Description Answer the following 8 questions thoroughly (please give the answers length and be detailed as possible). The book being used is criminology 8th edition. 1. What in your opinion are the primary reasons for man's cruelty towards one of his own species? Given the nature Vs nurture debate, how do you explain the non- criminal person raised in a criminal household or environment, exposed to a daily or frequent diet of delinquency and other related acts? Man by nature is a fighting animal, hence, to think of a crimeless society is a myth, there is no society without the problem of crime and criminals. Based on this philosophy, do you concur with the treatise 'crime is a normal phenomenon' of Emile Durkheim. 2. According to some eminent criminologists, criminal law is a barometer of moral thinking, and is an index of civilization because it is sensitive to the changes in social structure and reflects the mental fibre of a given society. What is your opinion? 3. Should we allow convicted murderers to have the counsel and guidance of the spiritual advisers right up to their execution time? Take into consideration the risk factors of having outsiders view the execution (team) and the potential threat to their safety? 4. Pretend you are a noted researcher and have been asked to assist in the effort to find the common set of personality characteristics associated with criminals. What methods would you use to capture the criminal personality? Would you use objective personality inventories? If you were successful, what would you do with your findings? How could this common personality profile be used in the criminal justice system? 6. Overall in general, society neglects the issues related to genocide, but we tend to focus on mass murder (ex: Manson murders; Jonestown; Koresh). We ask for gun control, we ask for strict sentences for such offenders, however, we don’t always stand to ceremony and protest when it comes to genocide. Is it because we are apathetic towards those with whom we don’t have a relationship or is it because our fear of becoming a victim of mass murder on our own soil eclipses any other fears we may have? For example, the annihilation of say, gypsies in another part of the world has no bearing on our lives but if it starts here on our turf, the probability is much closer that I may become a victim, which thereby might compel me to act in my effort for sell preservation. Your views, please. 7. Social control theory focuses on techniques and strategies that regulate human behavior and lead to conformity, or obedience to rules. Consider how mechanisms of social control, narrowly conceived, can support new religious, political, and psychosocial cults or sects. How does Social control theory help explain the attraction to Heaven’s Gate, the Aum Supreme Truth, the Order of the Solar Temple, or the Branch Davidians? Or Charles Manson? 8. Piracy is one of the crimes committed on the oceans. Is this similar, different, or identical to crimes like terrorism?
