The overall goal of this PSA is to bring awareness and prevention of domestic violence. The target audience for this PSA are mainly adults, specifically those who may not be aware or knowledgeable about the issue of domestic violence.
Domestic violence is defined as a pattern of coercive behavior that can include physical, psychological, sexual, economic and emotional abuse in order to gain control over another person in a relationship. According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline (NDVH), 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will experience some form of physical violence by an intimate partner at some point in their lives. This shows how prevalent the problem has become, with devastating effects on individuals’ psychological well-being and safety. It is important for people to know about domestic violence due it its prevalence and damaging effects on individuals’ health and safety. Domestic violence also has far reaching consequences such as decreased productivity at work, increased risk for substance use disorders among victims or perpetrators; higher rates of depression amongst survivors; social isolation from family members; homelessness due to lack of financial resources; long-term stress leading to chronic illnesses including cancer; loss of income for victims or families affected by domestic violence; increased healthcare costs for victims or families affected by domestic violence; disruption within communities when abusers are incarcerated rather than receiving evidence based treatment (such as therapeutic interventions); school drop out rates among youth living with domestic abuse increase substantially compared to other children not exposed (30% vs 8%) according recent research published by NCADV/CDC Study). Given these facts it is clear why people need to understand the issue—to protect themselves from becoming a victim or perpetrator of abuse, but also empower them with knowledge so they can help friends or family who may be affected by such behaviour. It is only through understanding what constitutes abusive behaviour that we can better identify it when we see it happening around us and take necessary action against it before someone gets hurt.
