The first section of this course explores the Enlightenment, especially the rational and scientific
interpretation of evidence. We link this idea that evidence can be interpreted accurately and consistently
to ideas generated
during the Enlightenment. Your paper should evaluate whether one or more of the five Enlightenment
principles from lecture were violated in two current controversies. You can choose two controversies on
your own or use the two that I provide (prescription drugs for mental health patients and the reasons the
Bush administration cited to go to war with Iraq).
